O' to be a freshman again!

I am getting nostalgic for my freshman year at Texas A&M. I recently signed up to help students move into their dorms in August. I have done this the past two years as well and it’s always been a fun experience. I remember moving in to my dorm nearly 3 years ago. We arrived mid-afternoon, much later than planned, of course; that’s how my family rolls. We got my key and went to the room to check it out. My roommate, Melissa, had left a note saying to call her when we got there. I called it almost immediately and she said they would be back soon. So, we started looking at the room a little. Melissa and her family arrived. We discussed where to place the furniture and came up with a plan. We rearranged the furniture and then my family and I went to get my stuff. We had it all in the room in one trip. Melissa and family were in awe. We even had most of it put away in less than 20 minutes – I guess a crew of six really helps though! That first night was awkward, but so exciting. We were so unsure of what to do with ourselves after our parents left. I don’t really remember what we talked about, except that we both thought it was crazy that we were actually there, alone and without parents, in college, together.

More members of the Class of 2014 are here every few days for their New Student Conferences. They look so excited and so nervous at the same time. I remember going to that conference with such excitement about everything new happening. It’s fun to be on the other side and watch them do the same thing. I like to listen to their conversations about dorm and college life – how it’s going to be so much fun and all that. I miss those days. Everything was new and exciting.

At A&M, the freshmen are very special, and it’s no surprise why. They keep the spirit alive. They keep us older students from getting too jaded and bored with the same things. They bring new ideas to the table, but also immerse themselves in our years-old traditions, which really are the heart of Aggieland.

O' to be a freshman again! I had a lot of fun that year – I learned what it was to be an Aggie, I learned how to be a college student, and I learned to live with others (many unlike me). We had a lot of fun in that dorm of ours – many game nights and other things we probably shouldn’t have been doing, like mattress surfing. But, hey, that’s what freshman year is for, right? To explore? I also learned that drama does not end after high school – valuable life lesson (haha!).

These past three years have mostly flown by. It’s a little crazy how quickly life seems to be moving. I guess this goes back to the last post I made with an addition, life is short, seize the day!
